The Diocese of Grand Island operates under the direction of Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt in his role as shepherd and teacher. Consisting of over 42,000 square miles in central and western Nebraska the Church is a true cross section of age, race and economic background, yet we are truly one in the faith and family of Christ. As members of a universal Church, we live and practice our faith in our parishes and homes. We share this wonderful gift, not only with those we see everyday, but with others throughout our diocese. It is this faith that we are called to live in a manner that reflects Christ in our midst.

The Diocese provides an organizational structure through its chancery offices and various ministries to ensure communication, education, cooperation and assistance in the religious needs of the Church throughout western Nebraska.

Fatima Celebration

To mark the centennial of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima and to call people to pray for the conversion of sinners, Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt is inviting all people throughout the diocese to join him in praying the rosary for this intention. On the 13th of each month, starting in May on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima and ending on Oct. 13, Bishop Hanefeldt is asking the faithful of our diocese to gather in our churches to pray the rosary for this intention.
For those in the Grand Island area, please join Bishop Hanefeldt at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Grand Island on Saturday, May 13, for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8 a.m., the Rosary and Benediction. Mass for the feast of Our Lady of Fatima will follow immediately after Benediction. Then on the 13th of each of the following months, Bishop Hanefeldt will preside at a Holy Hour with Exposition, the Rosary and Benediction at a parish in one of the deaneries in our diocese. On Friday, Oct. 13, Bishop Hanefeldt will celebrate a Mass once again at the Cathedral in Grand Island to conclude this 100th anniversary celebration, rejoicing in the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Check with your local parish for their schedule for holy hours and the rosary.
