Sister Philomene Reiland, 80, of Concordia, Kan., died Aug. 2, 2021, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia.
Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 6 at the Motherhouse Chapel with Father Barry Brinkman officiating. Burial was at the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
Born in Aurora, IL on April 11, 1941, to Edward and Philomena Monaco Reiland, Sister Philomene was the second of three children, and was baptized Barbara. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on Feb. 2, 1959. On Aug. 15, 1959, Barbara received the habit and was given the name Sister Philomene, pronoucing her first vows on Aug. 15, 1960, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1963. She was a religious sister for 62 years.
Sister Philomene received a bachelor of science in music education in 1968 from Marymount College, Salina, Kan. In 1976, she received a master of arts in church music from St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, Ind. Sister Philomene did post graduate work in organ performance at the Julliard School of Music, N.Y.
She taught in Salina, Kan., Chicago, and Grand Island. She was the parish director of music in Concordia and Sterling, Ill.; assistant professor of music at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Ill., and director of music in Libertyville, Ill. She gave private piano lessons in Grayslake and Sterling while serving as director of music at St. Mary Parish in Sterling.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two brothers, James of Montgomery, Ill., and Thomas of Raleigh, N.C.
