Lent begins Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, and continues until the Easter triduum, which begins with evening Mass of the Lord's Supper Thursday, April 9.
The law of abstinence: Prohibits eating meat and applies to all Catholics ages 14 and older on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday, April 10.
The law of fasting: Allows a single full meal each day and two light meals at other times but no solid food between meals and applies to Catholics ages 18 through 59 on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women.
In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.
