June 21, 2022Sister Maureen Murphy, 90, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance.
She was born July 13, 1931 at Stuart, Nebraska to Jeremiah Patrick and Sophia Theresa (Kaup) Murphy and was given the name of Catherine Benedicta Murphy.
Sister Maureen followed the Lord’s call to the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity. She entered as a candidate on September 8, 1949 at Marycrest Convent in Denver, CO. She professed her vows on August 15, 1952. Sr Maureen Murphy received her B.S. degree in August 1959 from Regis College in Denver. She then obtained her M.A. in Theology from St. Francis College in Joliet, IL in 1965.
Her ministry of teaching took her to St. Mary’s in O’Neill, NE. St. Elizabeth’s in Denver, CO, Rushville, NE, Holy Rosary Mission, SD, St. Mary’s in O’Neill NE and St. Agnes in Scottsbluff NE and St. Francis, SD. She lived in Rome, Italy to teach at the Generalate. Following her return to the United States she would come to Alliance. From 1978 until her retirement she served in various Pastoral Ministries in Minot, ND, Alliance NE, Manderson, SD, and Denver CO until retiring in 2006 living in both Denver and Alliance.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance with Father Matt Koperski and Father Tim Stoner officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be Wednesday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
