All paid adults, volunteer personnel, religious communities, and clergy (bishops, priests [diocesan and religious], deacons, and seminarians) must complete a criminal background check. Criminal background checks are required to be updated every five (5) years. We offer online services for background checks through the CMG Connect Safe Environment Program.
In accordance with the Charter for the Protection of Children or Young People, when a priest, religious or deacon, not incardinated in the diocese, is to engage in ministry in the diocese, regardless of the length of time, the evaluation of his background may be satisfied through a written attestation of suitability for ministry supplied by his proper ordinary/major superior to the diocese along with completion of the Diocesan Safe Environment Training and Criminal Background check. This includes all international, temporarily assigned, visiting priests, religious or deacons.
1. When evidence of a criminal conviction is discovered in a criminal background check, a pre-adverse action letter requesting an appointment within five business days with the applicant is sent to inform them of the finding and obtain further information regarding the finding.
2. Applicant shall be provided with a copy of the criminal history report and a summary of Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
3. Applicant shall be instructed in the process of how to appeal criminal history findings with the background screening company.
4. If findings meet engagement criteria or are refuted and expunged from the individual's record, there will be a conversation to explore fitness to serve children and youth.
5. If findings meet the criteria for declining employment/volunteer service and findings are not refuted, the applicants shall be informed of the decision to decline their application, and an adverse action letter will be sent to them.
