GRAND ISLAND—A capital campaign nearly 10 years in the making is almost finished at Grand Island’s Resurrection Church. The final stages of what began with former pastor Father Mike McDermott as the “For All Generations—Taking the Next Step” campaign will culminate with the completion of a new worship space as well as renovation of the existing space under the guidance of current pastor Father Jose Kadaprayil. “The tiles have been laid and the coatings have been done. Now the process of “curing” is on,” he said. “Honestly, I do not know what that means, except we cannot walk over it with shoes on; if you need to walk on it, you need to remove your shoes.” Parishioners broke ground for the new addition in August 2018. The $4.8 million renovation includes a covered drop off area, a larger altar platform, a larger choir area and improved sound system. Father Kadaprayil said a dedication has been scheduled for 9 a.m. March 22. Resurrection Church parish began in 1973 under Bishop John Sullivan with the purchase of 12 acres on Cannon Road. The church was completed in 1975 and has grown to nearly full capacity with 500 parishioners. The new space will provide seating for up to 700. The last update to the church was in 1994 with the campaign “Resurrection 2000.” Groundbreaking began in April 2000 and the addition was finished by Ash Wednesday 2001. That campaign included a gathering area for the church, new offices, a multi-purpose room and parlor and eight classrooms. At the time, the worship area also had a facelift with pews surrounding the altar and new lighting and carpeting installed.
