On June 26th, former parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish on the Mirage Flats and other area residents gathered once again to celebrate Holy Mass in the closed church building. The historic parish had been the center of worship for more than 100 years in the rural area south of Hay Springs, but as the number of parishioners continued to decrease, the small mission was closed in the early 2000s. Since then, the local community has tried to gather yearly to celebrate the history and memories of the place together, as well as the generations of families that shared their lives there. After a few years of inactivity, the community began their annual celebration again.
Father Todd Philipsen, pastor in Chadron, was the celebrant and homilist for the Votive Mass to the Sacred Heart and was assisted by Fathers Dan Gilbert of Gordon and Matthew Koperski of Alliance. The celebration concluded with a social and the sharing of many fond memories. Although there is some sadness that the country church no longer has regular services, a spirit of joy marked the event. Gathering together to reflect on the immeasurable love of Jesus poured forth from His Most Sacred Heart, and especially that love shared in the particular place, served as a reminder to all in attendance of the many blessings they have received.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have Mercy on Us!
